The next national parliamentary election will be held under a caretaker government, once that system has been restored by amending the constitution, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed said on Sunday. The minister was speaking at the regular news briefing at the Home Ministry.

“The next election will certainly be held under a caretaker government. There is a political consensus on this,” the home minister said in reply to a reporter’s question.

“The country’s highest court has set aside the verdict on the Thirteenth Amendment. The caretaker government system has to be put back in place by amending the constitution through the legislature,” the minister said.

Asked about the extradition of ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina, Salahuddin Ahmed said: “Requests have been sent to India through the foreign ministry more than once to bring Sheikh Hasina back under the prisoner exchange agreement.”

On the attack on police in Gopalganj on Saturday, the minister said: “The administration is taking legal action against those involved in the incident.”

On the clashes and tension in Sajek, the minister said law and order there had been brought under control. During the tourist season, various groups there fight among themselves and try to establish dominance, the minister said, and the government and the army have taken the necessary steps to maintain law and order.

Asked about the raid on the Purbachal home of an additional deputy inspector general of police and the allegations against the officer, Home Minister Salahuddin said: “The officer has been withdrawn, and departmental proceedings will be started against the officer. We will follow the legal process. We will not take anyone’s identity into account.”

The minister said that this year, for the first time in many years, Durga Puja was celebrated across the country in complete peace and safety, with strong communal harmony and enthusiasm. The minister thanked the law enforcement agencies, the intelligence agencies, journalists and people from all walks of life for this.
