US President Donald Trump has said the killing of Iran’s leaders must stop so that it is possible to identify who is involved in negotiations. He also repeated his opposition to Iran acquiring nuclear weapons, and said US military operations had severely damaged the country’s leadership and defence capability.
At an election rally in the state of Georgia, Trump said he had to stop killing Iranian leaders because, in the end, the United States needed to know who it was actually negotiating with.
Describing the losses to Iran’s military capability and leadership, he said Iran had no planes, no ships, nothing, and no top-level leaders. Its first tier of leaders was gone, and its second tier was gone too, he said.
Trump also defended his decision to withdraw from the nuclear deal signed in 2015 under then US President Barack Obama. He said cancelling the deal had been a step taken at a crucial time to close Iran’s path to a nuclear weapon.
Trump said he had cancelled one of the worst deals made by Barack Hussein Obama. The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), which many call the Iran nuclear deal, was leading Iran towards a nuclear weapon, he said, and fortunately he had cancelled it at just the right time.
Speaking about Iran’s nuclear programme, Trump claimed that Operation Midnight Hammer and Operation Epic Fury had completely destroyed the country’s uranium enrichment capability. He referred to military operations carried out in 2025 and this year.
Trump also said the United States had defeated Iran militarily, financially and in other ways.
