A scheduled meeting of the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) has been postponed because of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s visit to Japan. As a result, approval of 15 proposed development projects, to be carried out at a cost of about Tk 9,000 crore, has been delayed.

The meeting was due to be held today, Sunday, in the NEC conference room at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in the capital, but was postponed at the last minute.

Prime Minister and ECNEC chairperson Tarique Rahman was to have chaired the meeting. Officially, the postponement was put down to “unavoidable reasons”. Senior officials of the Planning Commission said, however, that the final decision to postpone the meeting was taken last night mainly because of the prime minister’s Japan visit.
