Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Dhaka Metropolitan North unit held its conference of rukons, the party’s full members, at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre in Agargaon, Dhaka, on Friday, 23 October 2026. The party’s ameer and Leader of the Opposition in parliament, Dr Shafiqur Rahman MP, attended the day-long conference as chief guest.
“Our main goal is to attain Allah’s paradise,” Shafiqur Rahman said in his speech. He said 70 per cent of the people who took part in the 2024 mass uprising were people who live hand to mouth, and this contribution of day labourers and working people in the path of Allah was very important.
He reminded the members of the sacrifices made by those who held responsibility in the past and urged them to play a responsible role in today’s free working environment. They must give thanks for the blessings Allah has given, he said, and seek Allah’s help at every moment, following the example of sacrifice set by the prophets Ibrahim and Ismail.
On the national election, Shafiqur Rahman said: “Even though the people voted for us, those votes could not be protected. That was our own weakness.” The party must identify its past mistakes and weaknesses and take care not to repeat them, he said. He called on members to build strong resistance against wrongdoers, with the people on their side, so that honest and capable candidates win the coming city corporation elections.
“We will not sit back and watch the show. Wherever we have the strength, we will mount proper protest and resistance. This country will be run on the basis of the Quran, inshallah,” he said. At the end of the conference he launched a mobile app named “Nagorik Sheba” (Citizen Service), developed by the Dhaka Metropolitan North unit, which offers more than 50 services for citizens.
Speaking as special guest, Jamaat Secretary General Professor Mia Golam Parwar said full membership was not a post, title or power but a standard of life, principle and morality. “The stronger our standard and spirituality as rukons, the stronger the organisation will be,” he said.
The conference was chaired by Mohammad Selim Uddin, ameer of Dhaka Metropolitan North, and moderated by its secretary, Dr Muhammad Rezaul Karim. Assistant Secretary General Rafiqul Islam Khan MP and central executive council members Mobarak Hossain and Nurul Islam Bulbul MP were among the other speakers.
The conference was held in two sessions. In the first, from a quarter to 10am until 11am, more than 13 thousand rukons voted to elect the ameer of Dhaka Metropolitan North for the 2027-2028 term. Central executive council member Mobarak Hossain conducted the vote, assisted by Nurul Islam Bulbul MP, also a member of the central executive council, and central working committee member A Sabur Fakir. The main organisational session began at 11am.
