Mohammad Harun-or-Rashid, a former additional commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) and former chief of its Detective Branch (DB), has been dismissed from service.

He was given the major penalty for being absent from his post since August 6, 2024.

The decision was announced on Saturday in a notification signed by Manzur Morshed Chowdhury, senior secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs.

The notification says Harun-or-Rashid, a former deputy inspector general (DIG) of police, has been absent from his post without the permission of the proper authority since August 6, 2024. He was dismissed after the charge of desertion against him was proved beyond doubt.

According to the notification, he stopped coming to work while serving as the DMP’s additional commissioner (crime and operations). He did not return to work despite repeated attempts to reach him at his present and permanent addresses and by email.

Police headquarters then moved to take departmental action against him. A departmental case was filed on April 15, 2026, and he was served a show-cause notice. He gave no written reply within the deadline and did not ask for more time.

An investigation officer was appointed on June 22 to look into the charge. The report, submitted on August 6, found the charge of desertion against Harun-or-Rashid proved beyond doubt.

After the report and related documents were reviewed, a second show-cause notice was issued on August 20 asking why he should not be dismissed. He did not answer that notice either.

The Bangladesh Public Service Commission (PSC) was consulted on the proposed major penalty on September 21. On October 1 the commission advised dismissal, and on October 25 the President gave his approval.

The notification says that under the Government Servants (Discipline and Appeal) Rules, the dismissal takes effect from the date of desertion, August 6, 2024.
