Protection and indemnity for the July fighters will be guaranteed constitutionally, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has said. He was speaking on Tuesday afternoon, 6 October, after the sixth meeting of the special committee on constitutional amendment.
The home minister said various demands were made at the meeting, including constitutional recognition of the July mass uprising and a constitutional guarantee of indemnity and protection for the July fighters.
He said the ordinance for the protection of the July fighters had already been turned into law and was valid, but it was only a law. The protection would now be brought into the constitution, at a specific place in the schedule, so that the July fighters’ indemnity and protection were held constitutionally.
On the proposal to speed up trials, he said it was that the trials of those responsible for crimes against humanity, genocide and heinous killings, including “the fascist Sheikh Hasina”, her accomplices and others concerned, should be expedited.
The home minister said those making the proposal had pointed to the cases under way at the International Crimes Tribunal, and that the government had told them it was sincere about speeding those up.
