Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan said in his speech to the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday that the UN has become incapable of carrying out its duty to keep world peace. He also called for reform of the UN Security Council.
Erdogan has long demanded that the Security Council be made more representative and inclusive.
“Let us admit that a system in which the views of more than 190 countries depend on the will of five is not fair, and cannot build full trust,” he said.
“The United Nations, founded 81 years ago to maintain peace and security, has now become incapable of carrying out that duty — or, one might say, has been made incapable,” Erdogan added.
The Turkish president also strongly condemned the situation in Gaza. “Anyone with humanity, compassion and mercy in their heart, and a sense of justice and conscience, cannot close their eyes to what is happening there,” he said.
“Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas has been unable to take his seat in this hall for two years in a row,” Erdogan said. “This injustice against our Palestinian brothers and sisters wounds the conscience.”
He urged countries that have not yet recognised the state of Palestine to reconsider their position, and called on all countries to increase pressure on Israel to end the war in Gaza.
He described Gaza as “the most inhumane and most shameful prison camp of our time”.
