Port authorities have formed an investigation committee over allegations that a container full of fabric rolls worth 30 million taka went missing from Chattogram port.
The committee was formed Monday (Sept. 7) after clearing and forwarding (C&F) firm SRS Syndicate submitted a written complaint to the port authority’s chairman.
According to the complaint, the vessel MV MCC Danang unloaded containers at NCT-2 berth of Chattogram port on Aug. 15. Among them was a 40-foot FCL container carrying 668 bales of fabric for Savar-based export-oriented garment company Gold Star Garments Limited.
Customs sources further said that on behalf of the importer, C&F firm SRS Syndicate filed a bill of entry on the customs’ ASYCUDA World server on Aug. 22 to clear the goods. After paying all customs and port dues, the firm went to collect the container from the port’s CCT yard on Aug. 30, but port authorities failed to deliver it.
SRS Syndicate owner Md. Hafizur Rahman alleges that when they went to take delivery of the container on Aug. 30, port authorities were unable to bring it down. After searching for several days without finding the container, they submitted a written complaint to the port authority’s chairman.
He further said the missing container held about 30 million taka worth of fabric. With the fabric now unavailable within the scheduled time, the client has also been put in a difficult position, as they will fail to deliver the export goods to the buyer on schedule.
Chattogram Port Secretary Syed Rifayet Hamim said an investigation committee has been formed over the missing container, and the investigation is under way.
