Bangladesh and the United Kingdom have held talks on strengthening cooperation in climate adaptation and capacity building, access to climate finance and the transition to renewable energy, to meet the shared challenges of climate change.

The issues were discussed at a meeting in London on Thursday between Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam and Rachel Kyte, the UK’s special representative for climate, the foreign ministry said in a press release on Friday (30 October).

The talks covered investment opportunities in carbon markets and in the green and blue economy, as well as ways to strengthen climate resilience and speed up the move to renewable energy.

Shama Obaed outlined Bangladesh’s ongoing efforts to build capacity to cope with climate risks, expand renewable energy and encourage local communities to take part in climate action.

The two sides exchanged views on the unequal impact of climate change on women and children and explored the potential for cooperation in climate technology and innovation.

They also stressed turning global climate commitments into effective action.

The meeting reviewed the priorities for the upcoming COP31, with particular emphasis on climate finance, adaptation and closer cooperation to meet shared climate challenges.

Bangladesh’s High Commissioner to the UK, Mohammad Abdul Muhith, was present.
