CHUADANGA — A conference of sugarcane growers was held in Darshana, Chuadanga, aimed at boosting cultivation and ensuring quality supply during the planting and crushing seasons.
The meeting was held Wednesday, July 30, at the Keru Training Complex, organized by the agriculture division of Keru and Co. in Darshana.
Dr. Abdul Alim Khan, joint secretary and director (sugarcane development and research) at the Bangladesh Sugar and Food Industries Corporation, was chief guest. The session was chaired by the company’s managing director, Rabbik Hasan.
Special guests included Dr. Jebun Nahar Ferdous, the corporation’s head of technical services, and Ghias Uddin, its chief sugarcane procurement and extension officer.
Sugarcane growers Shamim Hasan, Azizul Haque Dablu, Abjalur Rahman Dhiru, Abdul Bari, Morshedur Rahman, Lincoln and Sohel Rana also spoke.
Dr. Abdul Alim Khan said sugarcane was essential to keep the factory running, and the company would try to meet the reasonable demands of growers. Good-quality seed had not yet been produced, but efforts to improve seed quality were under way, he said. If Keru’s products could not be brought to market, the company would fall behind, he said, adding that necessary steps had to be taken under the new arrangements.
Also present were Ashraful Alam Bhuiyan, Keru and Co.’s managing director (agriculture); Mahbubur Rahman, deputy managing director (extension); Delwar Hossain, seed inspector; farm manager Suman Kumar Saha; and all sub-zone heads, along with about 150 growers.
