Workers from several garment factories are protesting by blocking roads in the capital’s Mirpur.

Traffic came to a halt in Mirpur 10, 11 and 12 and surrounding areas after the workers blocked the roads from 9am on Sunday (1 November).

“Since the morning, workers have come out in Mirpur 10, 11 and 12 and the surrounding areas. They are blocking roads and pressing their demands,” said Jalal Uddin, officer-in-charge of Pallabi police station.

According to local sources, the protest began at about 9am with a road blockade at the Mirpur 10 roundabout. Commuters and passengers bound for various destinations suffered as traffic stopped.

Meanwhile, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has been deployed in Chandra and the Palli Bidyut area, Shafipur, Konabari and Mouchak, Naojor and the Bhogra bypass in Gazipur to keep law and order normal amid labour unrest over pay rises and other demands.

Garment workers had also blocked roads in Mirpur on Saturday demanding higher wages.
