Shahriar Zaman Rana, 40, the eldest son of former member of parliament and freedom fighter Major (retd) Mohammad Akhtaruzzaman Ranjan, has been stabbed and seriously injured in Katiadi, Kishoreganj.
Major (retd) Akhtaruzzaman alleges that police have not recorded a case although a written complaint was filed at the police station. Police say the case was not recorded because the complaint needed some corrections.
The attack took place on Wednesday night, November 4, at Gachihata Bazar in Sahashram-Dhuldia union of the upazila. Police detained one man, Limon Mia, 30, the same night. He is the son of the late Shamsuddin of Gachihata village.
Rana’s younger brother, Md Sabbir Zaman Roni, said his brother was first treated at Katiadi Upazila Health Complex. On the way to Dhaka for better treatment he began having seizures. He was rushed to Ibn Sina Hospital in Dhaka, where surgery was completed at about 3am, and he was then kept in the post-operative ward for close monitoring.
He said Rana was moved to a cabin on Thursday morning, November 5. By Thursday afternoon his condition had improved somewhat, but he is not yet out of danger.
According to witnesses and local sources, on Wednesday afternoon several young men and teenagers were taking drugs on the ground of Gachihata College, which Major (retd) Akhtaruzzaman founded. Rana saw them as he walked past the college to the bazar, stopped them, swore at them and told them to leave the ground.
Local sources said that when one teenager refused to leave, Rana slapped him. The boy went home and told his uncle, Tajul Islam, and people in the area what had happened.
Angered, Tajul Islam took a knife from his house and went looking for Rana at Gachihata Bazar with several others. Some local BNP leaders and activists were reportedly with him.
According to witnesses, at about 8pm on Wednesday Rana was sitting in Chitra Pharmacy at Gachihata Bazar when Tajul Islam walked in, stabbed him below the right side of his chest and ran away.
Local people took him to Katiadi Upazila Health Complex. When his condition worsened, the doctor on duty referred him to Dhaka for better treatment.
On Thursday afternoon Major (retd) Akhtaruzzaman Ranjan said his son had been stabbed at Gachihata Bazar, and that local drug users and some BNP men were involved.
He alleged that police had not recorded his written complaint as a case. Instead, he said, police told him to file the complaint against unnamed accused rather than naming them.
Major Akhtar said the attack happened in the bazar and everyone saw it. Naming unknown accused, he said, makes it easier for police to take money and opens the way to harassing people needlessly. He added that he does not want to harass anyone.
Md Rafiqul Islam, officer-in-charge of Katiadi Model police station, said one person had been detained and a complaint received. He said it needed some corrections, so the complainant had been asked to correct it, and the case would be filed once the corrected complaint was received. Police are working to identify and arrest the others involved.
Separately, Shahriar’s uncle Mizanur Rahman filed a written complaint at the police station early on Thursday, naming several people over the attack.
