A farmer, Afsar Sheikh, 60, has been hacked to death with a boti, a kitchen blade, by his drug-addicted son in Lohagara upazila of Narail.

The killing happened at the family’s home in Boyra village, Laxmipasha union, on Thursday afternoon (5 November). The son, Khairul Sheikh, 24, has been on the run since.

Family members and neighbours said Khairul, who was unemployed, often quarrelled with his parents over money for drugs, and when he did not get it he sometimes smashed things in the house. On Thursday afternoon he got into another argument with his father, and at one point attacked him with the boti, striking his hands, chest, stomach and head and killing him. Khairul’s mother and wife were present at the time. He fled after the attack.

Shariful Islam, officer-in-charge of Lohagara police station, said the body was being sent to the Narail district hospital morgue for a post-mortem examination, and that efforts were under way to arrest Khairul.
