Bomb threats have caused fresh alarm over air travel across Europe. On Thursday morning several passenger planes had to make emergency landings away from their destinations, the latest in a series of threats against flights in Europe, Reuters reported.

The Irish airline Aer Lingus said in a statement that its flight EI402 from Dublin to Rome changed course as a security precaution and landed safely at Evreux airport, 100 kilometres west of Paris.

Belgian media reported that a plane that made an emergency landing at Brussels’ Zaventem airport belonged to the Polish airline LOT.

Meanwhile, the Italian air force helped a Finnair plane from Helsinki land safely at its scheduled airport in Rome, a source familiar with the matter said.

Bulgarian officials said three planes made emergency landings in the country because of bomb threats. The interior minister told the broadcaster bTV that two planes, from Copenhagen and Madrid, landed in Sofia. According to local media, the third, from London, landed in Plovdiv.

On Tuesday, bomb threats were made against at least seven planes and a cruise ship across Europe. They caused widespread disruption at airports, but no explosive device was found anywhere. No country has so far been blamed for the threats.

European officials have recently accused Russia and Iran of “hybrid attacks” and sabotage. Moscow and Tehran deny carrying out any such operations.

This week, unidentified hackers also shut down refrigerators in supermarkets in several European countries. Some experts believe the hoax bomb threats may be part of the same kind of effort to cause disruption cheaply while leaving room to deny responsibility.
