Gunmen shot dead the son of a BNP leader in broad daylight in Dumuria upazila of Khulna on Thursday.

The killing took place at about 1:30pm on November 5 at Abdul Gaffar Sana’s tea stall on the Ramkrishnapur-Ansarabad road in the upazila.

The victim was Tarikul Islam, 37, son of Sheikh Abdus Salam, convener of the Rangpur union unit of the BNP.

According to local sources, three of Tarikul’s associates were with him at the stall: Sadik Rahman, 20, Momin Gain, 26, and Shaon, 22. Two young men wearing face masks and helmets arrived on a Pulsar motorcycle, stood in front of the stall and spoke with Tarikul.

When the two asked for cigarettes, Shaon was sent to a nearby shop to buy them. One of the attackers then stepped inside the stall and fired two rounds at Tarikul. As he fell to the ground, the attackers sped away on the motorcycle.

The killing, carried out inside a tea stall in daylight, spread fear and tension across the area.

Local sources said Tarikul had been in a dispute with people involved in the drug trade. He was also said locally to have been at odds with several groups over the occupation of a large government canal in the Amvita area and over local dominance. Whether the killing grew out of any of these disputes has not yet been confirmed, though talk in the area centres on the dispute with drug dealers.

On receiving the news, a team from Dumuria police station and the District Detective Branch went to the scene and began an investigation.

Khandaker Hafizur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Dumuria police station, said police were trying to arrest those involved. The body has been sent to the morgue for a post-mortem.

Questions remain in the area over who carried out the killing, why, and how it was planned. Police say the investigation aims to establish the real motive and identify those responsible.
