Students of the Home Economics College in the capital, affiliated with Dhaka University, are protesting to demand the resignation of the principal, Professor Dr Meherun Nessa. In the movement that began on Thursday morning, November 5, angry students have kept the principal confined for seven hours straight.

The students began the protest on the college campus at 10:30 am on Thursday. They are demanding the principal’s resignation, accusing her of cancelling two students’ hall seats, demanding money and mistreating students.

Tabassum, a student of the 2019-20 session, said the hall provost, Professor Meherun Nessa, cancelled the seats of two 2020-21 session students without any reasonable cause. When they went to ask her why, she could not give a satisfactory explanation.

Tabassum also alleged that the provost demanded Tk 12,600 from those students. One of the students whose seat was cancelled even clutched her feet, begging her to reduce the amount, but she still treated the students badly.

The student said residents are fined even for returning to the hall a little late. Because of these and other complaints over time, they have been protesting since 10:30 this morning, and they will continue until the principal resigns, she said.

Attempts to reach the college’s principal, Professor Dr Meherun Nessa, for comment on the allegations were unsuccessful.

The Home Economics College runs under Dhaka University’s Faculty of Biological Sciences. Asked about the matter, the faculty’s dean, Professor Dr Md Abdul Karim, said: “I know nothing about this.”
