A drone strike on the city of Nyala in western Sudan’s Darfur region has killed at least 21 people and injured 40 others. The strike hit a market in the north of the city on Monday evening.

AFP reported this on Tuesday, citing doctors and witnesses.

A doctor at Nyala hospital told AFP: “Twenty-one people were killed in last night’s attack. More than 40 were injured.”

A resident said the market was hit at around 8pm local time on Monday. Civilians used it, and so did armed men, in particular members of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

Nyala is now known as the RSF’s de facto headquarters. The force has set up its own administration there, challenging the authority of the internationally recognised government and the army.

Sudan’s army and the RSF have been at war since April 2023. The war has killed large numbers of people and created one of the world’s worst hunger and displacement crises.

The Sudanese army regularly strikes RSF-held Nyala. The report did not confirm who carried out the latest drone strike.
