He once hated Muslims, and planned to bomb a mosque. But when he went to that mosque and was met with warmth by the people there, his thinking changed.
He began learning afresh about Islam, a faith he had seen as a symbol of terror, and in time he became a Muslim. The change in the life of former US soldier Richard “Mac” McKinney is the subject of the Oscar-nominated documentary Stranger at the Gate.
McKinney lives in Muncie, in the US state of Indiana. He served in the US military for about 25 years and held deeply negative views of Muslims.
That hostility grew into hatred, and out of it he planned a bomb attack on a mosque in Muncie. His aim was to set off a large explosion inside and kill people.
Before carrying out the plan, he decided to go to the mosque to learn what it was like inside.
He expected to find something there that would deepen his hatred of Muslims. Instead he had a very different experience.
The worshippers did not treat him as an enemy. They were warm towards him and took him in. Their courtesy, hospitality and kindness left a deep mark on him. Among the people he had long feared and resented, he found sincerity and compassion.
The experience forced him to rethink his beliefs. The gap between what he had assumed about Muslims and what he saw made him want to learn about Islam. The visit he had made in order to plan an attack became the start of a change in his outlook.
He began to read about Islam, including an English translation of the Quran. Learning about its teachings, ethics and values led him to reconsider his old views, and in time he decided to embrace Islam. A journey that began in hatred ended in faith and goodwill.
Stranger at the Gate, the documentary about this change in his life, was nominated for the Oscar for best documentary short in 2023. It shows how a man who planned to attack a mosque began to change his view after meeting the kindness of the Muslims there.
McKinney’s story is not only about one man’s conversion. It is also an example of the power of how people treat one another, of compassion and understanding. The hatred that once pushed him towards a destructive plan was broken down by the sincere behaviour of a few people, a reminder that kindness can sometimes set a person’s thinking and life on a new course.
