Chinese troops have pushed about 50 kilometres into India’s Arunachal Pradesh, the state’s Congress president and former education minister Bosiram Siram has alleged.
Arunachal Chief Minister Pema Khandu rejected the claim, saying he does not believe any Chinese incursion is taking place on the border.
On Monday, October 26, Siram alleged that members of China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) had taken up positions in several areas of Upper Subansiri district. He called for an independent and full investigation to establish the real situation on the border.
Siram said a Congress delegation led by him visited the border areas from August 26 to 29, travelling from Itanagar via Nacho to Limeking and Taksing, and talked to local residents.
He claimed Chinese troops had advanced 40 to 50 kilometres into Indian territory and held positions on high ground. “Chinese troops have already come 40 to 50 kilometres inside Indian territory. They are positioned at various places. They can be seen on the hilltops, and we are below,” he said.
In June, a local organisation, the Nah Welfare Society, alleged that the Chinese army had increased its presence near Taksing.
The Indian Army rejected that claim as “wrong and baseless”. In August, a delegation of the People’s Party of Arunachal also claimed that Indian patrols were being prevented from entering several key areas.
Union Minister Kiren Rijiju had rejected claims of a 60-kilometre Chinese incursion but acknowledged that Chinese activity had increased in high-altitude border areas.
Questioning the government’s denials, Siram asked why local residents kept making such complaints if there was no incursion or aggressive activity on the border. The complaints should be independently investigated rather than dismissed as rumours, he said.
He further claimed that several strategically important areas, including Asaphila, had come under Chinese control, and that some areas had disappeared from online maps. The report did not include information that would allow these claims to be independently verified.
