The BNP put a note of dissent on every area that needed radical change and did not keep its word to the nation, Jamaat-e-Islami ameer and leader of the opposition in parliament Dr Shafiqur Rahman said on Sunday.

“By agreeing to a compromise proposal on the notes of dissent, Jamaat as the opposition will not deceive the people,” he said.

He was speaking at around 12:30pm at a discussion organised by Jamaat-e-Islami to mark the first anniversary of the signing of the July National Charter.

“The government is trying to shift the blame onto the opposition to cover up its own failures,” the Jamaat ameer said. “The BNP has deceived 70 percent of the people. We will not join this committee.”

“Do not plot against the long march,” he said. “If you do: in 1998 we held a long march in the face of the Awami League’s conspiracy. This time too we will not bow to any conspiracy.”

Shafiqur Rahman alleged that the government was trying to build a narrative that Jamaat was joining hands with the discarded fascists. “Yet it was the BNP that sought Awami League votes in the election, and now it is rehabilitating their leaders,” he said.

“A government that cannot stop drugs, corruption, extortion, land grabbing and the arms trade, and cannot control law and order, has no right to stay in power,” the opposition leader said.
