Parliament Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad said Bangladesh’s 13th parliamentary election was among the freest, most credible and fairest in the country’s history.

He said observer missions from the European Union and other countries praised the vote and that democracy had been reestablished through the election.

Ahmad spoke on Tuesday, November 3, during a courtesy meeting with representatives of the European Union in Bangladesh, European Partnership for Democracy and Bangladesh Society for the Change and Advocacy Nexus.

The speaker said the Awami League government had looted the country’s democracy through injustice, repression and extrajudicial killings over 17 years.

He said the July 2024 uprising restarted Bangladesh’s democratic progress and argued that genuine development was impossible without democracy.

The delegation discussed ensuring voting rights for people with disabilities, increasing their participation in elections and improving their political representation.

It also proposed representation for people with disabilities in the constitutional amendment committee and measures to make parliamentary debates accessible to people with hearing disabilities.

European Partnership for Democracy and B-SCAN are working together to support voting rights and election participation for people with disabilities in Bangladesh.

EU representatives and officials from the Bangladesh Parliament Secretariat attended the meeting.
