Dhamrai authorities have provided rehabilitation materials and financial aid to an impoverished elderly couple living in a dilapidated home after media reports highlighted their hardship.
Tamiz Uddin, the lawmaker for Dhaka-20, and Dhamrai Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Al Mamun handed the assistance to the family.
They visited the couple’s home on Monday, November 2, to deliver the aid.
Local sources said 89-year-old Hanesh Ali and his 79-year-old wife, Sufia Akter, were living with their orphaned grandson in a house without electricity, a toilet or a tube well. The couple had lost their two sons and daughter-in-law.
After illustrated reports about their financial hardship appeared in several media outlets, the upazila administration arranged materials to repair their home, cash and a battery-powered van.
The assistance included two bundles of roofing sheets, a battery-powered van for earning a living, six thousand taka from the upazila administration and Tk 30,000 from the district council.
Dhamrai Upazila BNP General Secretary Shamsul Islam, Vice President Rakibur Rahman Farhad, Office Secretary Mikail Hossain and Upazila Project Implementation Officer HM Mohitul Islam were among those present.
Hanesh Ali became emotional after receiving the assistance. He said he and his wife had struggled to survive with their orphaned grandson after losing their two sons and daughter-in-law. The van would allow his grandson to earn money for the family, he said.
The couple’s grandson said his grandparents had raised him by begging after his parents died. He said the van would help him work and support them.
Al Mamun said officials learned of the couple’s situation through the media and immediately arranged financial and rehabilitation assistance to meet the family’s urgent needs.
