Bangladesh has set a target of generating 3 to 4 thousand megawatts of electricity from solar panels by next summer, State Minister for Power and Energy Aninda Islam Amit said.

He made the remarks on Monday, November 2, at a meeting on installing solar-power systems at 31 public universities. The meeting was held at the University Grants Commission building in Agargaon, Dhaka.

The state minister said the government had taken several steps to keep load-shedding at a tolerable level.

He said the government wants people to face less hardship next summer, or for any disruption to remain manageable. He described rooftop solar as the simple solution.

He said the main goal was to reduce public hardship.

Power Secretary Mirana Marukh said the government wants next summer to be manageable for people and is giving solar power priority toward that goal.
