Jamaat leader retired Maj Akhtaruzzaman has been released from jail in a case filed over alleged obstruction of official duties and misconduct toward airport officials.

He was released from Dhaka Central Jail on Tuesday, November 3. Central leaders of Jamaat-e-Islami gathered at the prison gate to receive him.

A High Court bench led by Justice KM Zahid Sarwar granted Akhtaruzzaman bail on Sunday, November 1.

Detective police arrested him at his home in Dhaka Cantonment on the evening of October 2. A court granted police one day to question him the following day.

The case statement said passengers became angry on October 1 after luggage from Flight BG-338 arriving from Madinah, Saudi Arabia, was delayed. Airport Executive Director Group Captain SM Ragib Samad went to the scene to control the situation.

Akhtaruzzaman was accused of verbally abusing Samad, pushing him out and threatening to assault him. The statement also alleged that he made offensive remarks about the aviation minister.

Akhtaruzzaman joined Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami ahead of the 13th national parliamentary election in 2026 after years in BNP politics. The BNP expelled him for a fifth time in 2022.
