The Awami League is trying to create anarchy in society, the water resources minister, Mohammad Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Annie, has said. The government is constantly alert, both politically and legally, to the banned party, he said.
He was speaking to reporters after a meeting of the law and order coordination committee at the Chattogram circuit house on Wednesday.
The water resources minister said Chattogram is a very important industrial and economic region of the country, so its overall security is being given particular weight. Law enforcement agencies have been given the necessary directions to take more effective steps to recover drugs and illegal weapons in the Chattogram area, he said.
Answering a reporter’s question about criminals being released on bail, the minister said the government had already taken strict measures on the matter, and that special emphasis had been placed on ensuring ordinary people in Chattogram can move about in full safety and ease.
After the chief guest’s address, the invited guests held an open discussion on the local law and order situation. Those present included the Chattogram City Corporation mayor, Dr Shahadat Hossain; the Chattogram divisional commissioner, Dr Md Ziauddin; the deputy commissioner, Mohammad Zahidul Islam Mia; the Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) commissioner, Hasan Md Shawkat Ali; the deputy inspector general (DIG) of the Chattogram range, Abdul Kuddus Chowdhury; and the Chattogram district superintendent of police (SP), Md Masud Alam, along with other senior officials.
