Russia is reported to be helping Iran build up an advanced supersonic cruise missile capability. Passing on the technical know-how needed to build military capacity at home is seen as more significant than supplying weapons. The secret programme, known as C430L, began in 2023 and has continued during the ongoing US-Israeli war on Iran.
Under the programme, senior specialists from the Russian missile maker NPO Mashinostroyeniya have dealt directly with Iranian defence bodies, according to the report. The main aim of their work was to help Tehran develop ramjet propulsion, an engine technology that allows a cruise missile to sustain supersonic speed while flying through the atmosphere. Iran has already built and flight-tested a ramjet propulsion system.
Russian engineers analysed the data from Iran’s ramjet flight tests and advised their Iranian counterparts on technical problems with the fuel system, combustion stability, the air intake and the engine nozzle, the report says.
If successful, the assistance could eventually give Iran the ability to produce and further develop a new family of advanced cruise missiles on its own. A 20-year comprehensive strategic partnership treaty signed by Russia and Iran in January 2025 has expanded defence cooperation between the two countries.
