Prime minister Tarique Rahman has held a bilateral meeting with Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan, at which the two leaders pledged to further strengthen the historic and friendly relationship between Bangladesh and Turkey and broaden it in many directions.
The meeting took place on Tuesday (September 22) at Turkish House, near UN Plaza in New York, the prime minister’s assistant press secretary AKM Nazmul Haque said.
The two leaders exchanged views on matters of mutual interest and discussed the scope for expanding existing cooperation in areas including the economy, trade and investment.
They also discussed important regional and international issues, and stressed the need for Bangladesh and Turkey to keep up close cooperation and coordination in areas of mutual interest.
Prime minister Tarique Rahman and President Erdogan also pledged to open new areas of cooperation based on the two countries’ mutual interests and shared priorities.
The prime minister is visiting the United States to attend the 81st session of the UN General Assembly. On Tuesday, as well as attending the opening of the General Assembly, he held a series of meetings with heads of state and government and heads of international organisations.
As part of these, he met Bhutan’s prime minister Tshering Tobgay, World Bank Group president Ajay Banga and Haiti’s prime minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé. The meetings covered bilateral relations, matters of mutual interest and regional and international cooperation.
At the meeting with Ajay Banga, the two sides discussed Bangladesh’s development priorities, economic progress and development cooperation. They also exchanged views on strengthening the World Bank’s support for Bangladesh’s development work and widening the scope of future partnership.
The prime minister also met Julie Bishop, the UN secretary-general’s special envoy on Myanmar. They discussed a sustainable solution to the Rohingya crisis and an effective role for the international community in reaching it. The prime minister called for international cooperation to ensure the dignified return of the Rohingya.
At the meeting between Tarique Rahman and Haiti’s prime minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé, the two discussed bilateral relations between Bangladesh and Haiti, matters of mutual interest and aspects of regional and international cooperation. They also exchanged views on strengthening cooperation for the benefit of both peoples and opening new areas in the bilateral relationship.
