Rajshahi University (RU) has taken disciplinary action of varying severity against 99 students over ragging, physical and mental abuse, physical assault and the forging of seals. The penalties include suspension of studentship for one academic year (two semesters), cancellation of residential status, exclusion from future consideration for residence and strict warnings. It has also been decided to inform the punished students’ parents by letter.
The information emerged from reliable sources on Wednesday (September 23) and was later confirmed by the vice-chancellor, Professor Dr Md Faridul Islam.
The decisions were taken at the university’s 549th syndicate meeting on Tuesday.
Syndicate sources said a total of 99 students from various departments were punished. The studentship of 18 has been suspended for a year: 14 for ragging, three for forging seals and one for a physical attack by a junior on a senior. Two students’ residential status has been cancelled. A total of 20 students, including the 18 suspended for a year, will not be considered for residence in future. Separately, 79 students from various departments have been given a strict warning for ragging, with a recommendation that tougher action be taken if any of them is directly or indirectly involved in ragging again. The parents of the students concerned will be informed of the penalties by letter.
An analysis of the list of complaints presented to the Rajshahi University Disciplinary Board meeting 2026 shows that those punished include 31 students from the banking and insurance department, 18 from history, 15 from public administration, 13 from geology and mining, 7 from agronomy and agricultural extension, 4 from clinical psychology, 4 from physical education and sports science, 4 from painting, oriental art and printmaking, 2 from economics and one from graphic design, crafts and history of art.
The vice-chancellor, Professor Dr Md Faridul Islam, said nearly a hundred students had been given penalties of varying length over ragging on the basis of specific complaints. The message to students is that the present administration will make no compromise over involvement in ragging, he said.
