A young man named Aminul Islam, 32, is accused of hacking his mother to death with a hasua, a curved sickle, in Mohanpur upazila of Rajshahi. When his father, Mujib Sardar, stepped in to protect his wife, Aminul also hacked and seriously injured him, according to the allegation.
The incident took place at about 1am on Wednesday night (September 23) in Sardarpara village of Mougachhi union in the upazila. Police detained Aminul Islam after the incident.
Police recovered the body of Jannatun Begum, 55, and sent it to the Rajshahi Medical College morgue for a post-mortem. Mujib Sardar has been admitted to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital.
According to police and local sources, Aminul Islam is alleged to have been addicted to drugs for a long time. He often clashed with family members over drug use and getting money for it, and family members had tried at various times to control him without success, local sources said.
Police and local sources said that on Wednesday night, during an argument over family matters, Aminul attacked his mother, Jannatun Begum, with a hasua. She was seriously injured and died on the spot. When his father, Mujib Sardar, came forward to protect her, Aminul hacked and injured him too.
District police spokesperson and additional superintendent of police Sabina Yasmin told the media that Mohanpur police detained Aminul Islam in a drive immediately after the incident.
Legal proceedings are under way, she said. Aminul Islam will be produced in court after a murder case is filed, and Jannatun Begum’s body will be handed over to her family after the post-mortem.
