A fire in Brahmanbaria Sadar has burned down 10 houses, destroying everything, including furniture, belonging to 14 families.
The fire broke out at about 11am on Thursday (September 24) in Gazaria village of Machhihata union in the upazila.
Locals said the fire started from a short circuit in the electricity meter at the house of Alfaz Mia in the village and quickly spread to neighbouring houses. Local people tried to put it out but could not bring it under control as it spread rapidly, and eventually all 10 houses burned down. None of the belongings of the 14 families living in them could be saved, though no casualties were reported.
Two units of the Brahmanbaria fire service and civil defence reached the scene and brought the fire under control after about an hour.
“The fire was brought under control after about an hour’s effort,” said Md Faruk Ahmed, deputy assistant director of the Brahmanbaria fire service and civil defence station. “It is initially believed to have started from an electrical short circuit. Work is under way to assess the damage.”
