Wednesday (September 9) marked one year since the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) election. On the anniversary of the 2025 election, DUCSU Vice-President (VP) Sadik Kayem has issued a farewell message to Dhaka University students.
Alongside expressing gratitude for students’ trust and cooperation, he called on students to remain vocal in ensuring regular DUCSU elections to sustain the positive changes on campus. The DUCSU VP also pledged to stand by the welfare of Dhaka University students under all circumstances. In the DUCSU election held on September 9 last year, the Islami Chhatra Shibir-backed “United Students Alliance” won 23 of 28 posts.
What the DUCSU VP wrote in the letter
At the start of the letter, Sadik Kayem wrote: “Dear fellow students, Assalamu Alaikum. Today marks one year since the constitutional student union (DUCSU) election held in the spirit of the July revolution.”
He wrote that, overcoming various instances of non-cooperation and limitations, they had put in their utmost effort over the past year to fulfil the promises made to students, thanks to their genuine support and affection. On the campus environment, he said they had worked to ensure a peaceful and stable environment on campus despite obstacles and setbacks. He said the path back to the long-standing oppressive culture of gonoroom and guestroom dormitory practices had been closed.
In the letter, the DUCSU VP also highlighted changes across various areas over the past year. He wrote that Dhaka University had seen the beginnings of positive transformation in every field, including transport, initiatives to encourage higher education and research, skills development, healthcare, and improving the study environment in residence halls. Referring to students’ role, Sadik Kayem said everyone was a proud partner in this journey toward building a democratic, student-friendly, peaceful and dream campus.
He closed the letter by writing: “Heartfelt thanks and warm congratulations to you for standing by us through DUCSU’s one-year journey. With hope that regular DUCSU elections and the continuity of positive change on campus will be sustained…”
