The government has launched an initiative to expand rooftop solar power nationwide, create new local entrepreneurs, and build an effective solar-service network. The initiative is part of implementing the goals of the National Renewable Energy Development Strategy 2026-30.
The information was disclosed Thursday in a press release from the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources.
Under the initiative, qualified service providers will be listed by district and geographic area. These organizations will offer technical support, investment and business packages, customer service, and operations and maintenance for rooftop solar and other renewable energy technology installations at the local level. To this end, all of the country’s power distribution companies have jointly issued a notice inviting service providers to register.
The notice says the new framework will give local business owners, small and medium entrepreneurs, young people, women entrepreneurs and technology-based firms the opportunity to participate in the renewable energy sector. At the same time, local organizations will be able to build their technical, financial and business capacity through partnerships with experienced national-level companies and investors.
It also says service providers will be selected through a transparent and competitive process. Both individual companies and joint ventures will be eligible to apply and participate, creating opportunities for local and new entrepreneurs to build partnerships with experienced firms.
One of the initiative’s key objectives is to expand the rooftop solar sector beyond a handful of large companies or city-centered businesses, into every region of the country. This is expected to create a range of affordable and innovative investment and service packages for customers, while fostering healthy competition among service providers.
The government is also working to encourage investment in rooftop solar through special incentives, tax and duty benefits, easy low-interest financing, and expanded startup financing opportunities for new and innovative entrepreneurs. Particular emphasis is being placed on involving customers and entrepreneurs in rural and relatively remote areas in this initiative.
Under the National Renewable Energy Development Strategy 2026-30, the government has set a target of raising renewable energy’s share of power generation to 20 percent by 2030, including a plan to generate 5,500 megawatts from rooftop solar.
The strategy’s main goal is to advance the country’s energy security, economic growth, industrialization and climate-resilient development by establishing a safe, affordable, sustainable and low-carbon energy system. Achieving this goal will require building a skilled workforce, local entrepreneurs, investors and an effective service network nationwide.
The government hopes this initiative will help rooftop solar become a key vehicle for the country’s energy transition, while also emerging as a new field for small and medium businesses, local investment, skills development and employment. A central aim of the initiative is to connect business owners, young people and women entrepreneurs across every region of the country — from Panchagarh to Patuakhali, and Kurigram to Cox’s Bazar — with this growing renewable energy market.
