Bangladesh’s per capita debt currently stands at more than 129,239 taka, Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury has said.
The finance minister shared the information Sunday (Sept. 6) in a parliamentary session, in response to a written question from Kushtia-1 lawmaker Reza Ahammed. Deputy Speaker Barrister Kaiser Kamal presided over the session.
Lawmaker Reza Ahammed had asked the finance minister, “What is the current per capita debt of the country’s people, what was it in 2026, and what steps has the government taken to reduce the debt burden?”
In response, Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury said the per capita debt of the country’s people stood at 129,239.19 taka as of March 31, 2026.
The finance minister also said the government is emphasizing increased revenue collection, sound and efficient management of public funds, and making debt management more disciplined.
Meanwhile, responding to a question from Bagerhat-4 lawmaker Md. Abdul Alim, he said the volume of defaulted loans at the country’s six state-owned banks stands at 147,776.36 crore taka. Of these, Janata Bank PLC has the highest amount of defaulted loans, at 75,396.67 crore taka.
Citing figures as of June 30, the finance minister further said Agrani Bank PLC’s defaulted loans stand at 29,029.67 crore taka, Bangladesh Development Bank PLC’s at 8,088.79 crore taka, BASIC Bank PLC’s at 8,131 crore taka, Rupali Bank PLC’s at 19,281.74 crore taka, and Sonali Bank PLC’s at 15,048.39 crore taka.
