The formal construction of the Laldia Container Terminal, backed by Danish cooperation, is set to begin Sunday, aimed at boosting Chattogram Port’s capacity, modernizing its operations, and further driving the country’s foreign trade.
The groundbreaking ceremony will be held at 11 a.m. Sunday at the Laldia project site in Chattogram’s Patenga area. Finance and Planning Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, MP, will attend as chief guest, with Shipping Minister Sheikh Robiul Alam, MP, as special guest.
Chattogram Port is one of the main engines of Bangladesh’s economy, handling the bulk of the country’s import-export trade.
Keeping pace with growing foreign trade, expanding the port’s capacity, speeding up container-handling operations, and ensuring internationally standard service are considered highly important.
In this context, construction of the Laldia Container Terminal is a major initiative to expand Chattogram Port’s capacity. The terminal, built with modern infrastructure and technology-driven management, is expected to add a new dimension to the country’s seaport management.
Alongside making Chattogram Port’s operations more efficient and dynamic, the terminal is expected to play an important role in boosting Bangladesh’s international trade and logistics capacity.
Built with Danish cooperation, the terminal is expected to support infrastructure development at Chattogram Port, expand container transport and handling capacity, and help establish modern port management. This is expected to make the country’s import-export operations easier, faster and more efficient.
The Ministry of Shipping is carrying out various initiatives aimed at modernizing the country’s port and shipping infrastructure and ensuring internationally standard service. The Laldia Container Terminal project is an important addition to that continuing effort.
The project is being implemented under a public-private partnership (PPP) model. It is one of the largest PPP investments in Bangladesh’s history, with total investment exceeding $550 million. The project will build a container yard, jetty, gate, modern cargo-handling systems and other necessary infrastructure.
The proposed terminal will have an annual handling capacity of roughly 0.8 million TEUs, with a jetty approximately 615 meters long. It will be equipped with state-of-the-art technology and modern cargo-handling systems, including advanced STS cranes.
The groundbreaking ceremony will be attended by representatives from various ministries, the Chattogram Port Authority, related domestic and foreign organizations, business leaders, journalists and other stakeholders.
