Police have arrested five leaders and activists of the Awami League and its associated organisations in Kotchandpur, Jhenaidah, in a case filed under the anti-terrorism law with former prime minister Sheikh Hasina as the principal accused. They were arrested in separate operations on September 21 and 22.
Those arrested are Khan Ziad Bin Razi, 20, joint general secretary of Kotchandpur upazila Chhatra League; Liton, 43, president of the ward 1 Krishak League in the municipality; Mohinur Biswas, also known as Khokon, 42, a member of the upazila Awami League; Sohag, 34, a member of the municipal Jubo League; and Nasim Ahmed Sakil, 30, vice-president of Dora union Chhatra League.
According to police, Khan Ziad Bin Razi and Liton were arrested on September 21, and Mohinur Biswas, Sohag and Nasim Ahmed Sakil on September 22. Kotchandpur model police station officer-in-charge Mehedi Hasan confirmed the arrests.
Police said that early on September 21 there were reports of a procession by leaders and activists of the banned Chhatra League on the Kaliganj-Jibannagar road in the College bus stand area of Kotchandpur town. Police went to the scene and broke up the procession, and said a stick was recovered.
Sub-inspector Mujahidul Islam of Kotchandpur model police station then filed a case naming former prime minister Sheikh Hasina as the principal accused, along with 52 named people and 100 to 120 unnamed others.
Police said the case brings charges under several sections of the Anti-Terrorism Act 2009, and that operations to arrest the other accused are continuing.
