The United States has about 210 million registered voters, but many eligible citizens do not participate in elections.
Turnout in midterm elections is usually lower than in presidential election years.
US presidential election turnout has hovered around 60 percent this century. In 2020, turnout reached 66.6 percent, the highest in more than a century.
Midterm turnout has generally been lower. In 2018, 50 percent of voters cast ballots, the highest midterm turnout in more than 100 years. The rate fell to just over 46 percent in 2022.
Early voting in this election has risen substantially from the previous cycle. More than 58 million voters have already cast early ballots, compared with about 46 million in the 2022 midterms.
The current early-vote total is more than half of the 122 million votes cast in the entire 2022 election.
The increase points to changing voting patterns, but it remains unclear whether overall turnout will rise or voters are simply changing how they cast their ballots.
