London’s historic Fazl Mosque is approaching the 100th anniversary of its founding.

The mosque opened in 1926, when the call to prayer was delivered from its minaret for the first time. The event is regarded as an important milestone in the institutional religious life of Muslims in Britain.

Muslim representatives from several countries, political figures and diplomats attended the opening ceremony.

Sheikh Abdul Qadir opened the mosque’s door with a silver key, invoking the name of God as he opened the place of worship.

The mosque’s imam, Maulana Abdur Rahim Dard, described it as a center of worship, fellowship and mutual cooperation.

Emphasizing religious tolerance, he said people of other faiths could visit if they respected the mosque’s sanctity and worshippers’ rights.

After the speeches, GF Malik climbed one of the mosque’s four minarets and gave the call to prayer. That began the regular call for the five daily prayers.

Fazl Mosque is known as one of London’s historic mosques. Its establishment is linked to the growth of Britain’s Muslim population and the institutions that supported their religious life in the early 20th century.
