A covered van driver named Atiar Rahman, 55, has been killed when the Khulna-bound Betna Express train hit his vehicle in Jhikargachha, Jashore.
The accident happened at around 11:30am on Wednesday (November 4) at an unguarded level crossing on the road from the Gazirdargah filling station to Joykrishnapur.
Atiar Rahman lived in Katakhal Colonypara, Jhikargachha.
Witnesses said the covered van, loaded with poultry feed, was crossing an unguarded level crossing on the Joykrishnapur road on Wednesday morning when the Khulna-bound Betna Express arrived and struck it hard. The collision tore the van’s cab from its main body and the driver was seriously injured.
Local people quickly rescued the driver and took him to the 250-bed Jashore General Hospital, where the doctor on duty declared him dead.
Locals say the unguarded crossing has no gateman, so vehicles and pedestrians on this important road take a risk every time they cross.
Jashore GRP police SI Liton said a covered van driver had died after being hit by the Khulna-bound Betna Express. At the family’s request the body was handed over to relatives without an autopsy. Legal action will be taken over the incident, he said.
