Canadians cheer US midterm result as tariff rebuke

The result may not bring quick tariff relief, but Ottawa hopes a changed Congress gives it a better hand as trade talks resume.

The result of the US midterm elections may well be what many Canadians wanted. The Democrats’ sweeping win is being seen partly as voters’ rejection of the tariffs Donald Trump imposed on America’s close trading allies.

“I was doing cartwheels down the street,” Ontario Premier Doug Ford said on Wednesday morning.

He described it as “a win for Canada”.

Tuesday night’s result may not bring Canada relief from those tariffs any time soon. But with trade talks resuming, there are hopes that the political shift could create a more favourable climate for Ottawa to reach a better deal.

The Democratic leaders Hakeem Jeffries and Chuck Schumer, whose political clout has now grown, have in recent months argued for cutting the tariffs on Canada.

Even so, Democratic control of Congress may not change tariff policy much, because most of Trump’s tariffs were imposed by executive order without congressional approval.
