An oil tanker caught fire after striking a mine laid by the navy in the Strait of Hormuz, halting the ship’s passage, Iran’s navy said.

Citing a navy statement, Iran’s semi-official Tasnim News Agency reported that a “violating” oil tanker struck a naval mine while sailing through a hazardous area in the eastern part of the strait, setting the vessel on fire.

Iranian authorities said the tanker had switched off its identification and navigation systems.

The statement added that Tehran has repeatedly warned shipowners that the Strait of Hormuz is unsafe, and that the waterway is closed to unauthorised vessels attempting to pass through it without coordination.
