Special Response Battalion 11 (SRB-11) has arrested Abu Mokarom, 44, a death-row convict in a murder case who escaped from Kashimpur High-Security Central Jail in Gazipur, in Sonargaon, Narayanganj.

The information came in an SRB-11 press release on Wednesday (November 4) afternoon.

Members of the Special Response Battalion (SRB-11) arrested him in a drive in the Meghna toll plaza area of Sonargaon at around 8pm on Tuesday (November 3).

According to the SRB-11 press release, Abu Mokarom was sentenced to death in a murder case filed with Chandanaish police station in Chattogram. He had been held at Kashimpur High-Security Central Jail in Gazipur since July 9, 2013. He escaped along with other inmates during the riot and arson at the jail on August 6, 2024.

The release said that after the political changeover of August 5, 2024, inmates banded together on the morning of August 6 and began rioting and setting fires. At one point they took jail guards hostage. They then scaled the boundary wall using ladders made from broken electricity poles and escaped. The jail authorities filed a case over the incident with Konabari police station in Gazipur.

SRB said Abu Mokarom took on various disguises after the escape to avoid arrest, hiding temporarily in different parts of the country under a concealed identity. His location was traced through SRB-11’s intelligence surveillance and modern information technology.

The murder case was filed with Chandanaish police station in Chattogram in November 2009, SRB said. Abu Mokarom was the prime accused in the case, filed under section 302 of the Penal Code.

The release said that over a family feud, Abu Mokarom and the other accused killed the aunt of his sister’s husband and left her body in a paddy field next to the house. At the end of the trial, on May 19, 2013, the Additional District and Sessions Judge’s Court-3 in Chattogram sentenced Abu Mokarom to death. The court gave the verdict because his direct involvement in the killing was proved beyond doubt, SRB said.

Abu Mokarom is the son of Abu Taleb of North Barkal village under Chandanaish police station in Chattogram.

The process of handing him over to the police station concerned for further legal action is under way, the press release said.
