Three senior officials have resigned from the US Justice Department, among them the department’s civil rights chief and a prosecutor in charge of investigating President Donald Trump’s conspiracy allegations.

US Attorney General Todd Blanche announced on Thursday that he had accepted the resignation of Harmeet Dhillon, the assistant attorney general for civil rights. Blanche, Trump’s former personal lawyer, is now serving as the country’s attorney general.

In her post, Dhillon was directly involved in a failed effort to collect voter registration lists from about 30 states ahead of this week’s midterm elections. Trump’s Republican Party suffered a heavy defeat in those elections.

According to several US media outlets, Dhillon wrote in her resignation letter that she had made her decision to resign known in October but had agreed to stay on until the elections.

On Friday, Blanche announced the resignations of two more senior officials: John Eisenberg, the assistant attorney general for national security, and Jason Reding Quiñones, the US attorney for the Southern District of Florida.

Quiñones had been overseeing an investigation into former intelligence officials. Trump had alleged that those officials were involved in a conspiracy to remove him from power.

Under the Trump administration, the Justice Department has brought cases and investigations against several people whom Trump regards as political opponents or enemies. Some prosecutors have lost their jobs for reluctance or failure to bring charges in these cases.

One of the most talked-about cases brought by the department is against former FBI director James Comey. He was charged in April with threatening to kill Trump by posting a photo of seashells on Instagram.
