Applications for the first-year undergraduate admission test at the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) for the 2026-27 academic year will open on 21 November. The admission test is scheduled for 16 January.

Professor Kamrul Hasan, head of BUET’s admission test committee and a teacher in the electrical engineering department, gave the information on Saturday (7 November).

He said the university authorities are going ahead with preparations to hold the test on 16 January. Meanwhile, the education ministry has decided to hold re-sits for students who failed one or two subjects in the HSC and equivalent examinations, with plans to hold the exams and publish the results between 2 and 31 December. A meeting was held at the education ministry on 4 November with these students in mind, attended by representatives of Dhaka University, BUET, the University Grants Commission and several other universities.

After that meeting, however, the Dhaka University and BUET authorities said they would hold their admission tests on schedule. As a result, none of the roughly 420,000 students who failed one or two subjects will be able to sit the BUET or Dhaka University admission tests, even if they pass the re-sit.

The number of students getting GPA 5 has also fallen in this year’s HSC and equivalent results. A total of 40,000 students got GPA 5 this year, 26,702 of them in the science and home economics streams.

Under BUET’s admission notice, applicants must have at least GPA 4 in the SSC or equivalent exam in science, as well as GPA 5 in the HSC or equivalent exam and GPA 5 in each of physics, chemistry and higher mathematics.

The BUET authorities are firm on keeping the entry requirements the same as last year. Professor Kamrul Hasan said a maximum of 10,000 students will be allowed to sit the test, while the number of GPA 5 holders is twice that. If applications exceed 10,000, many will be screened out on merit, so the university sees no need to relax the requirements.

He added that the space the university has for holding the test is limited, so it is not possible to test more than 10,000 students.

The application deadline and other details will be announced in a later notice, Professor Kamrul Hasan said.
