A bus carrying a madrasa study tour lost control and plunged into a roadside pond on the Chattogram-Cox’s Bazar highway in Satkania, killing two people. At least 30 people were injured, some of them reportedly in critical condition.

The accident happened at about 4am on Saturday (7 November), after the bus had passed the Railbit area before Keranihat in Satkania.

The bus was travelling from Burichang upazila in Cumilla to Cox’s Bazar. It was carrying more than 50 passengers, including teachers and students of Bakshimul Sunnia Islamia Senior Madrasa in Burichang, who were on a study tour to Cox’s Bazar. Passengers on another bus on the same tour gave the information.

The dead are madrasa teacher Sohana Afroz, 45, and Israfil, 56. After the accident, local people and workers from a nearby brick kiln came to help and pulled passengers out of the bus. The injured were then sent to hospitals in Keranihat and Chattogram. The two died on the way to hospital.

Nurul Absar, officer-in-charge of Dohazari Highway Police Station, said: “The bus lost control and fell into a roadside pond. Two people were killed and at least 30 injured. As the accident happened before dawn, local people first rescued the injured and took them to various hospitals. Highway police then went to the scene and joined the rescue. The bus has been recovered. Legal action is being taken over the incident.”

Local people say road accidents on the Chattogram-Cox’s Bazar highway have increased in the past few days. They say the project to upgrade the highway to six lanes must be carried out quickly, and have called on the authorities concerned to speed up the work.
