Beijing has protested US sanctions on two Chinese companies over alleged links with Cuba, and urged Washington to correct its “wrong move” quickly, Anadolu reported.

China’s commerce ministry gave the response on Saturday, according to the state news agency Xinhua.

The ministry said Beijing firmly opposes unilateral US sanctions on Chinese companies, and that such measures violate international law and the basic norms of international relations.

On Thursday, the US State Department imposed sanctions on eight entities and two individuals and identified five vessels as blocked property. Washington said the measures were part of the Trump administration’s wider effort to stop the Cuban government’s alleged harmful activities inside Cuba and across the Western Hemisphere.

The two Chinese companies on the list are China National Electronics Import and Export Corporation (CEIEC) and Beijing H&C Technologies Co Ltd. The United States acted against them over allegations that they supplied parts and equipment to Cuba’s armed forces.

The commerce ministry also said the United States had stepped up sanctions and suppressive measures against China in recent days and imposed several discriminatory restrictions, seriously harming the rights and interests of Chinese companies. It said this departed from the important consensus reached between the two countries’ heads of state and undermined the stability of China-US economic and trade relations.

The statement said Beijing reserves the right to take the necessary measures to protect China’s legitimate rights and interests.
