South Africa pacer Kagiso Rabada has set a new world record in Test cricket, becoming the fastest bowler to 350 Test wickets by balls bowled.
He reached the milestone in the third Test against Australia at Newlands in Cape Town on 31 October. South Africa won the match by 176 runs.
Rabada took three wickets in Australia’s second innings. He removed Matt Renshaw and Marnus Labuschagne in the first over of the chase, then dismissed Travis Head with the sixth ball of the seventh over. Head had made 14 off 26 balls. That wicket was Rabada’s 350th.
Rabada needed 13,808 balls to reach 350 wickets, passing his former teammate Dale Steyn, who took 14,719. Former Pakistan captain Waqar Younis is third with 14,905.
By matches, Rabada is South Africa’s second fastest. The Test against Australia was his 75th. Steyn is ahead of him, having taken 350 wickets in 69 Tests.
The overall record by matches belongs to Sri Lanka’s Muttiah Muralitharan, who reached 350 wickets in his 66th Test. India’s Ravichandran Ashwin equalled that record in 2019.
After Rabada’s three wickets, off-spinner Simon Harmer took six more as Australia were bowled out for 111. South Africa won by 176 runs and took the series 2-1.
