Near the end of the first day of the Mirpur Test in Dhaka, everyone was waiting for Shadman’s century. He was close to three figures when play was stopped for bad light. Play resumed later, but no more than four overs were bowled, so the 31-year-old opener’s wait for a hundred goes on.
Bad light ended the first day of the Mirpur Test before the scheduled close. Shadman is unbeaten on 99, with a century in sight, and Bangladesh finished the day on 213 for three.
Bangladesh won the toss and batted. The hosts suffered an early blow when Tanzid Hasan fell with the score on 9. A 59-run stand between Shadman and Mominul Haque then eased the early pressure. When Mominul went for 28, captain Najmul Hossain Shanto joined Shadman.
That partnership did not last long. The Bangladesh captain was out lbw to Jomel Warrican for 19 off 42 balls, the decision going against Bangladesh after a West Indies review. Towhid Hridoy then joined Shadman.
Shadman built his innings steadily and reached his 10th Test fifty. At the other end Hridoy scored relatively quickly. The pair added 67 for the third wicket. At tea Bangladesh were 177 for three, with Shadman on 79 and Hridoy on 36.
The two kept pushing the score after tea, but Hridoy was troubled by cramp. He returned to bat after treatment but was again overcome by pain while taking a single in Joshua Bishop’s over. He retired hurt on 42 off 84 balls and was carried off on a stretcher. Litton Das came in to bat in his place. Play was then halted for bad light and did not resume. For West Indies, Warrican took two wickets and Seales one.
