Hasan Nawaz fought on alone to the end, but with little support from his team-mates India were never really troubled. Shreyas Iyer’s side beat Pakistan by 19 runs in the men’s cricket final of the Asian Games to win gold.

Batting first at the Korogi Sports Park in Nisshin, India made 211. Pakistan could reach only 192 in reply. Nawaz kept their faint hopes alive with 96 off 51 balls, with five fours and seven sixes, before he was caught behind by Sanju Samson off the last ball of the innings, bowled by Shivam Dube.

Nawaz came in after Usman Khan fell with the score on 36 and added 87 for the fourth wicket with Saim Ayub, who made 29 off 22, the second-highest score. He kept going with Abdul Samad and Shan Masood, but his innings only narrowed the margin. Maaz Sadaqat made 23. Axar Patel, Washington Sundar and Dube took two wickets each.

Two fifties gave India a big total: Abhishek Sharma made 61 off 28 balls and Tilak Varma 51 off 22. Tilak and Dube added 69 in the last four overs to take India past 200; Dube made 27 and Iyer 21. Ahmed Daniyal and Minhaj took two wickets each for Pakistan; Minhaj gave away 25 in three overs and Daniyal 43, while Saim Ayub was the most expensive with 47.
