Opposition leader and Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman has called for 7 November, “National Revolution and Solidarity Day”, to be observed with due dignity. He made the call in a statement sent to the media on Thursday.
In the statement, the Jamaat ameer said 7 November is a significant day in Bangladesh’s national history. On this day in 1975, patriotic soldiers and ordinary people took to the streets together, determined to protect the country’s independence, sovereignty and national interest. Their joint resistance opened a historic chapter in confronting the conspiracies and crisis of the time. After the counter-coup of 3 November 1975 left the country unstable and uncertain, the united role of patriotic soldiers and the people on 7 November added a new dimension to the situation, he said. With crowds chanting “Naraye Takbir, Allahu Akbar”, the resolve to protect the country’s independence and sovereignty grew stronger.
He said the country and the nation face various political and national crises today as well. There is no alternative to national unity to resist any conspiracy or subversion against democracy, independence and sovereignty. Learning from past experience, any attempt to push the country back towards fascist rule and autocratic tendencies must be resisted, he said. Patriotic students and citizens, political parties, the government, the armed forces and everyone concerned must play a responsible and united role to consolidate the country’s independence, sovereignty and democratic progress.
On the occasion of “National Revolution and Solidarity Day” on 7 November, he called for national unity, patriotism and democratic values to be upheld to protect the country’s independence and sovereignty. He also urged all branches of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, and patriotic students and citizens, to observe the day with due dignity.
