“The IGP has finally said out loud what was on his mind: if the government gives permission, the police force under his leadership is fully ready to carry out crossfire. What he really means is that their hands have been itching for crossfire for a long time, if only the government would allow it a little!”

Bangladeshi researcher and academic Dr Mirza Galib wrote this in a post on his verified Facebook account on Monday. He is an assistant professor of chemistry at Howard University in the United States.

He added: “Hasina has gone, but a murderous Hasina lives inside each of their minds. It is just lying hidden, waiting for time and opportunity.

“In any civilised country, if someone in a position like the IGP’s said something like this, he would not be able to keep his job. Nor should he in post-July Bangladesh.

“The duty of government officials is to serve the country and the people under the constitution, not to work as hired killers for the government.”
